I don't know how well it will stand up to the rain or snow but it probably would be warm. I hear that they used to use paper as "batting" for quilts in the Victorian times.
If you have time have a look at the Upcycle That blog there is some pretty ingenious stuff on there.
I also found this Christmas tree that is made from Sprite bottles.
